Strong winds in store for today, prompting several ferry cancellations
Strong winds are expected across Newfoundland today. The strongest winds will occur along the coast from the Northern Peninsula to the northern Avalon Peninsula. Wind gusts in these areas could reach between 100 and 110 km/h. Central Newfoundland could see wind gusts between 60 and 90. Along the south coast, gusts between 80 and 90 are expected. Rain is expected later today along the west coast, and winds will gust to 70 in the Port aux Basques area. Rainfall amounts of 2 mm are expected in the Grand Falls-Windsor area. Strong winds to put a damper on weekend plans
Strong winds will kick off the weekend in northeastern Newfoundland. An area of low pressure will undergo a period of rapid intensification off the coast of Newfoundland on Saturday. From early Saturday morning until Saturday night, strong winds are expected across the Island. Most areas will see gusts from 70 to 90 km/h. However, areas along the northeast coast could see gusts from 90 to 110 km/h, with some higher local gusts possible.
