The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season comes to an end today.

This season there have been 18 named storms, 11 have developed into hurricanes and five into major hurricanes. A major hurricane is defined as a storm that reaches at least category three status.

Tropical Storm Alberto developed on June 19 and the last storm Sara formed on November 14. The names Tony, Valerie, and William were unused.

Storms this year caused 400 fatalities. It was the second costliest season in history with $222 billion in damage. The most damaging storms were Helene and Milton.

Hurricane season in the Atlantic runs from June 1 to November 30. These dates have historically described the period in each year when most subtropical or tropical cyclogenesis occurs in the Atlantic Ocean.
